We stayed there for a few days a couple of years ago but I have to admit, we saw little of the town as we decided to investigate nearby Ludlow instead. We have often thought of going back and your great post has made me determined to do so. A member of staff at our hotel insisted the name was pronounced as Shroosbury so I'll stick with that, though I know it's debatable. Lovely descriptions of the many old buildings, name derivations and of course, actual names around the city. Grope Alley made me laugh! It's even better than the Bashful Alley in Lancaster! I've been setting the work in editing in Shropshire on the Long Mynd, and there has been much hilarity from my draft-readers over the word Salop, being a very rude word in French and Italian these days.
