As Dalriada was essentially an island and coastal nation, ships were vital for communication or war. Their wars ranged from attacks on Ireland and on Pictish Orkney and on the Isle of Man, so they were fairly active. I believe that the medieval Scottish 'host' was also similar to the Anglo-Saxon 'fyrd' and well into the 16th century there were 'weaponschaws' where men had to produce what weapons they had ready to repel attacks from the descendants of the early English in your excellent blog.
