So many early manuscript books were works of religious devotion, an act of true faith, so this also enters in. But some, like the earliest herbals and books of astrology/astronomy were simply made beautiful because that was how books were thought of. Fortunately artists and fine craftsman still make gorgeous books, but their percentage is breathtakingly small in today's world of cheap paperbacks and eBooks.
