I just bought your book as a Kindle, and I'd love it if you'd put me on your fan list to be notified of future booksDelle Jacobshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09551688823035092802noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2456802468539868519.post-2339078122638242462012-03-18T05:33:35.685-07:002012-03-18T05:33:35.685-07:00Thanks for an enjoyable and educational article. :...Thanks for an enjoyable and educational article. :)Barbara Monajemhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06740868750916582900noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2456802468539868519.post-87019672062261488232012-03-17T14:09:58.120-07:002012-03-17T14:09:58.120-07:00And then there's the fate of the horses in the...And then there's the fate of the horses in the French Army... one little march to Moscow, and the Continent's supply of horses was diminished for decades--and again, not exclusively or even predominantly due to battle casualties.
Somewhere in my conflict studies, I came across someone's diary, wherein the soldier recounted how easy it became to shoot a big, scared horse who just wanted the heck off the battle field than to shoot one's fellow man from the saddle.
Sad business...Grace Burroweshttp://graceburrowes.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2456802468539868519.post-63644932252423994852012-03-17T07:16:00.015-07:002012-03-17T07:16:00.015-07:00Jonathan, thanks for this! One always does feel that the cavalry got a probably undeservedly bad reputation on the Peninsula, but I've felt over the last fews years that at least part of that is just plain ignorance of what a horse is like and what they're capable of, but also ignorance of just how dependent people were on them 200 years ago. And how utterly essential they were to an army.

I believe Wellington always felt a certain 'distance' from them because of the sense that they were ruled by Horse Guards in London and not by him.M.M.
