Indeed, the whole story of how the Sutton Hoo site came to be investigated continues to fascinate. And when you consider that the magnificent Wayland's Smithy predates Sutton Hoo by many centuries, it's another reminder that Beowulf, like the Homeric heroes, continues to inspire....dunfieldhatmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13892166209557558881noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2456802468539868519.post-74246641285242789082017-08-18T12:33:39.639-07:002017-08-18T12:33:39.639-07:00Tolkien and Beowulf are always linked in my mind, ...Tolkien and Beowulf are always linked in my mind, but it was his writings on Anglo-Saxon and Medieval poetry that led me to Lord of the Rings. I was lucky enough to go to Orkney a couple of years ago. Maes Howe, Ring of Brodgar, Stones of Stennes, even the excavations of the huge complex next door, are all within spitting distance of one another. It stands to reason they'd be used as "props" in the re-telling of a great Norse tale beneath the Earl's/Jarl's roof. Great pictures, too.Linda Acasterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03096791092366530129noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2456802468539868519.post-14955692003256539702017-08-17T02:19:20.919-07:002017-08-17T02:19:20.919-07:00I can see how Tolkien came up with Smaug and Bilbo...I can see how Tolkien came up with Smaug and Bilbo the thief.
